Topic#: 95-2432011 Crystal Drive Suite 707 Office: AFMCArlington, VA 22202 Contract #:F04611-95-C-0083Phone: (703) 920-7766 ID#: 95TT7-018PI: Dr. Sam BaranTitle: Large Volume, High Speed, Data Management TechnologyAbstract: One of the major problems facing data management todayis that collection capabilities far outstrip analysiscapabilities. This is particularly true of scientific andengineering data sets. Analysis methods require access that crossfile/data granule boundaries. We propose to address this problemby integrating unified data models of scientific data as embodiedby the widely used data formats CDF, NetCDF, and HDF through theuse of a commercially available data management system, METEOR.We propose to customize METEOR to handle the access requirementsas imposed by the CDF, NetCDF, and HDF scientific data models. In particular this will involve clustering techniques to optimizeaccess to large multidimensional datasets through temporal, spatial, or special sampling ordering rules. In Phase I wepropose to demonstrate a prototype system utilizing one of theabove data formats integrated with the METEOR data managementsystem. This will involve a set of extraction and compositionfilters to populate the METEOR databases with metadata from thescientific datasets against which standard spatial and temporal,or attribute based queries can be formulated. The datasetsretrieved from the data management system using the compositionfilters, can be merged into a single dataset for analysis. PhaseII would involve specific ordering rules, and building a robustsystem for integration into a commercial product. http://www.nttc.edu/resources/funding/awards/dod/1995sbir/95p1af.asp
